World Toilet Day 2021

A clean and functional toilet is necessary in ensuring proper sanitation and hygiene for all. Proper toilet use helps prevent spread of germs and diseases, and promote healthy habits, good grooming, and overall well-being and dignity. GIZ, through the Fit for School Program, supports the Department of Education in improving access to clean and functional toilets through the WASH in Schools Program. Availability of gender-segregated toilets within school premises is also one of the crucial indicators of the WinS Program. Since its implementation, massive improvements were seen in the proportion of schools providing access to functional and gender-segregated toilets within school premises from 49% (14,981 out of 30,574) in school year 2017/18 to 65% (29,344 out of 44,815) in SY 2020/21.

To further support schools included in the pilot face-to-face implementation, the program also provided cleaning and disinfection supplies to ensure clean and functional toilets in schools upon reopening.
